Gay Activist Murdered In Uganda; Tragic

  • What is the primary solution to confronting sin in the world, or what should it be? Ideally it should be with the preaching of the Gospel, the repentance of sin and turning towards Jesus Christ as the exclusive Savior from our sin. Any violent attempt to force conversion on someone completely violates the teachings of Jesus. Sadly, a perverse view of Christianity may be taking hold in Uganda, which has cost a gay activist his life. From the Associated Press:

A prominent Ugandan gay rights activist whose picture was published by an anti-gay newspaper next to the words “Hang Them” was bludgeoned to death. Police said Thursday his sexual orientation had nothing to do with the killing and that one “robber” had been arrested.

Activists were outraged over the death of David Kato, an advocacy officer for the gay rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda. His slaying comes after a year of stepped up threats against gays in Uganda, where a controversial bill has proposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts.

Kato, who had received multiple threats, was found with serious wounds to his head caused by an attack with a hammer at his home late Wednesday in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. Kato later died on the way to the hospital.

“We are horrified and saddened by the murder of prominent human rights activist David Kato in Uganda yesterday afternoon,” Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson posted on Twitter.

Human Rights Watch called for an urgent investigation, saying that Kato’s work as a prominent gay rights campaigner had previously seen him face threats to his personal safety.

“David Kato’s death is a tragic loss to the human rights community,” said Maria Burnett, senior Africa researcher at HRW. “David had faced the increased threats … bravely and will be sorely missed.”

A Ugandan tabloid newspaper called Rolling Stone listed a number of men they said were homosexuals last year, including Kato. Kato’s picture was published on the front page, along with his name and a headline that said “Hang Them.”

Kato and two other gay activists sued Rolling Stone over claims that it had violated their constitutional rights to privacy and won the case earlier this month. A judge issued an injunction banning the publication of the identities and personal details of alleged homosexuals…The introduction of the anti-homosexual bill in 2009 followed a conference in Kampala that was attended by American activists who consider same-gender relationships sinful. The U.S. evangelicals believe gays and lesbians can become heterosexual through prayer and counseling. Some gay Ugandans still resent that American intervention.

“David’s death is a result of the hatred planted in Uganda by U.S evangelicals in 2009,” said Val Kalende, a Ugandan gay rights activist. “The Ugandan government and the so-called U.S evangelicals must take responsibility for David’s blood.”

I would rather the law be neutral rather than punish homosexuals or promote homosexuality. Christians should stand against the normalization of homosexuality while not advocating for their persecution. We are all created in the image of God and have inherent value because of that.

“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:26-28

Whoever commits murderous acts like this one will have to answer for it just as will any sinner, including someone engaging in homosexuality. The only way to for either to find salvation is by repenting of their sin and turning to Jesus Christ.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ Matthew 7:13-23

“Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:15

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:1-6

“let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:10-12″

Look for universal condemnation of Christians on this as the Left still defends Islam when Muslims commit violent acts.

  • Talk about complete doublespeak.

Here you go – first you quite accurately say this, "Sadly, a perverse view of Christianity may be taking hold in Uganda, which has cost a gay activist his life." Then you completely undo it by saying this, "Whoever commits murderous acts like this one will have to answer for it just as will any sinner, including someone engaging in homosexuality." Comparing murder to homosexuality? Unbelievable – so much for "pro-life".

Then you drone on, "Look for universal condemnation of Christians on this as the Left still defends Islam when Muslims commit violent acts." You're 'Christianity' comes shining through.

  • I condemn the murder of this man, completely consistent with being pro-life. I don't hear many Liberals condemning the killing of Christians around the world. Sin is sin, we are guilty of it.
