Blonde UCLA Student Rants Against Asians Talking On The Phone In The Library; Is It "Hateful"? (Video)
-
A young female student at UCLA has gotten some attention with her rant against Asian people talking on their cell phones in the library during finals week. But is it “hateful”? Here is the video:
This is really just a rant about people talking on their phones in the library. The people who are doing it just happen to be Asian. My Asian-American wife watched this with me and she thinks it is more a waste of time than anything else.

Okay, NO, it's not hateful, but it IS highly offensive and I'll tell you the reason why. It's really simple. If people are being loud in the library, then those "PEOPLE" need to be quiet. Their race and their extended families and genealogies and how they wash clothes on the weekends is not necessary. Just get up and tell them to please be quiet or report them to the head reference librarian. Their race does not need to be an issue, so why even bring that part up except unless to pick on them? I could see if she were describing to the head librarian and saying "those Asian people" are being loud over there, then yes, that makes sense because race is being use as a NECESSARY descriptor. It was not necessary in this rant.
I agree. It is a rudeness issue, not a racial one. This gal does not have the tact to realize that and choose her words more carefully.
Agreed. Thanks for the comment. Oh, and don't try explaining this to a "womanist", she'll go ballistic on you.

I made a comment and got some colorful responses.
The problem is that Womanist is right. Complaining about people talking on their cellphones in the library is one thing, but when that complaint brings out this kind of nonsense, that shows an underlying racism. That she thought to mock their tone of speech, their family connections, their countries of origin, etc, shows these things to be on her mind.
The fact that your Asian-American wife doesn't find this racist is meaningless. She is not the some total of all Asian people, and even if she were she still couldn't make the call on what's racist or not. Racism is racism.

My wife has experienced real racism and prejudice in her past and she has a far better metric to judge something like this. To question her ability to judge this could be hinting at some racist undertones coming from your direction. See where this could go? To overreact to this video minimizes real instances of racism. The Left is obsessed with race and will seek to create division and racists where they do not exist.
I believe your wife has experienced racism. And I concede, saying your wifes opinion is "meaningless" went too far. There may indeed have been some racist undertones in my saying that (I don't claim perfection) There is also much worse racism than this video, I agree. People have definitely overreacted to it (in that she's received death threats).
All that said, this is racism. It is the racism of the Nazis or the KKK, but that doesn't stop it from being racist or disturbing.
What I meant to say in regards to your wife, is that her opinion, while valid, does not suddenly make this video not racist. It seemed to me like you were using her opinion in regards to this video as an authority that, in some manner, ended the question.
