Jerry Brown Signs Pro-Gay Textbook Bill
-
It is no surprise that a Democrat Governor here in California would jump at the chance to force school children to learn about homosexuality. Jerry Brown has signed the controversial pro-gay textbook bill that will increase the likelihood that starting in kindergarten students will be exposed to homosexuality. From the SF Chronicle:
Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a controversial bill to include the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans in California’s public school textbooks.
After the governor signed the bill introduced by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, he released a statement that said, “History should be honest. This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books. It represents an important step forward for our state, and I thank Sen. Leno for his hard work on this historic legislation.”
Leno called it a landmark piece of legislation.
“This will benefit all students by better informing them of the civil rights movement of the LGBT community,” Leno said shortly after the governor’s announcement this morning. “Denying them the fact of this historical chapter denies students a better understanding of their fellow classmates who may be a part of this community.”
The bill, SB 48, has gained national attention and both supporters and opponents were pushing hard on the governor’s office. It is not yet clear exactly what would be included in textbooks and it will be several years until that is known.
By signing the measure, the governor adds LGBT Americans, along with disabled Americans, to an existing list of groups that must be included in social studies instruction. Leno and other backers have said that talking about contributions of gays and lesbians could help to combat bullying of LGBT students and provide those students with examples of accomplished role models.
They have also pointed to the rapid advances in the LGBT civil rights movement as historic events that students should learn.
The process for updating textbooks statewide has been put on hold until the 2015-16 school year because of the state’s budget situation. When they are updated, the information could show up in classrooms in more states than just California as publishers tailor books to California’s standards because of the state’s large size.
And while the textbooks will eventually include information about LGBT people, the bill does not dictate how that information would be used in an actual classroom lesson.
Opponents of the measure had raised religious objections to homosexuality, along with questioning whether instruction about LGBT Americans was needed in classrooms.
If Liberals are to be consistent then we must also teach in an affirming way, those who have lived as polygamists or have expressed any other bizarre form of sexuality. Liberalism is a threat to the family and the moral fabric that holds society together. My daughter is about to turn five and enter kindergarten next year, this is why we are going to home school. There is no way I am going to let the Liberals who control education here expose her to a morally perverse lifestyle and try and intimidate her into accepting it. The case for home schooling your children just keeps getting stronger if you live in California.
